Man United pair Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo doubtful for Atletico Madrid trip

Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo are doubts for Manchester United’s Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid after missing training.

Michael Carrick’s stumbling side are winless in their four matches since opening the league phase with a 4-0 victory against minnows Sabah of Azerbaijan.

United’s latest setback came in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with struggling Tottenham, who equalised in stoppage time, despite having lost Rodrigo Bentancur to a second-half red card.

The Spurs midfielder was sent off for headbutting Shaw, who had reacted angrily to an ugly challenge by the Uruguay international.

Shaw played on until the fifth minute of added time and Mainoo completed the match, but both missed training at Carrington ahead of the side’s flight to Spain to take on Atletico.

United have a decision to make on whether the pair travel to the Spanish capital, with their availability sure to be a key question at the pre-match press conference.

The club have previously revealed their travelling party for European games but no longer plan to, having returned to continental action after a year away.

Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui are out of the Atletico match, joining long-term absentee Manuel Ugarte on the sidelines.

Matthijs de Ligt took part in Monday’s session as the defender steps up his rehabilitation from the back injury that has kept him out since last November.

Carlos Baleba is pushing for his first start after the £70million summer signing from Brighton made his debut off the bench against Spurs.

United defender Leny Yoro is due to join head coach Carrick at the press conference at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Monday evening.
